Importance of Creating
One of the main reason why we homeschool is because of self esteem. I think the school system is more about managing people than giving them an environment to learn. The peer pressure, bullying and lack of one on one in a classroom added with standardized testing and punishing individuality are a recipe for low or no self-esteem.
This is a topic for another post but a cornerstone to self esteem is creating- the act of expression and “making” something. Feeling the pride of accomplishment. I don’t just mean building something useful- but creating something has beauty or expresses a feeling. When you write a poem or short story or bake a cake or build a model airplane- or even build a virtual world in a computer game you a creating. It is empowering. Empowerment for anyone- not just children is one of the building blocks of self esteem, self awareness and self confidence.
