A Modern Day Sisyphus- A Man and His Lawn

Published by homeschooling under General Edit This

Over the weekend I went for a walk with 2 of my kids. I had a kind of surreal experience while walking throughout my suburban neighbourhood. All these men- and woman- mowing the lawn, edging their lawns, spraying poisons, trimming things, killing yellow flowers that didnt belong. Making sure the lawn mower tracked matched an were symmetrical. It all seemed, well, so odd, It reminded me of the Greek myth of Sisyphus, which I then went on to tell my kids.

The Myth of Sisyphus

In Greek mythology, Sisyphus was a great punished by the Gods. He punishment was a curse- he had to roll a huge boulder up a hill. When he reached the top- the boulder will roll back down and Sisyphus would have to start all over again. This went on and on.. for eternity.

This what mowing the lawn seemed to me- a punishment with no end or reason. Watching all these people spend their leisure time trying to tame nature and remove anything other than green grass from a large square patch of lawn.

Am am not anti- lawn cutting but seems like people are spending HOURS on this mind numbing and sory to say- useless task. Does every dandylion need to die?

What do you think?
